This is an exercise on your descriptive power, the “show-not-tell” principle.
Choose a district or any spot in the urban area of Hong Kong of your choice. Spend at least half an hour jotting notes about things you SEE and HEAR – stationary objects, moving things and people, on-going activities around you etc.. Learn to see and hear differently and in depth. Visit the place at least twice. Choose a different day of the week or time of the day, and pick a different corner to sit down to see and hear from a different angle. Observe the effect of time. Turn the notes you collected into a written portrait of the place. Problem-solving: how to present the bulk of raw details collected in a meaningful way? Think in terms of form, style and the use of analogies …
