Assignment 1
This is an exercise on integration.
You’re invited to use everything we’ve done in class and in your research to create a self-portrait. A common research element is to re-visit the day on which you were born using the microfilm newspaper materials in the library.
The project you submit should include three parts:
(1) the Raw Material you have used, including newspaper clippings, photos and other visual material that have inspired you, mind-maps used in the brainstorming stage, your own automatic writing etc.
(2) The work itself: either pure writing or an integration of written and visual material; in print form, 3-D object or hyper-text format.
(3) Title and a short paragraph (no more than three line) to qualify your creative intentions. Imagine your work is shown in an exhibition; or it’s an essay included in an anthology. This short paragraph would appear in a display card attached to your work, or it would be a smart blurb to invite your viewers/readers. How much should you disclose? What should be said and what should be withheld?
Assessment criteria:
- diversity of the raw material you have collected and worked on
-your power of associative, divergent and lateral thinking
- your creative leap: how flexible and bold you have taken your raw material to transform them for your self portrait.
- organization and focus
Remember: this is after all a writing class. Whatever you produce, writing is the core content and writing quality is a must.
